The biggest myth about dog training is that exercise solves dog behaviour problems. To claim that exercise will solve behavioural issues like separation anxiety, non-stop barking or aggression to pulling on the lead ect is wishful thinking that has no relevance. We get told that when a dog is driving you crazy you need to ‘run it out of them’ to calm the dog down. Unfortunately when you get back home one of you is exhausted – the other one is the dog.
Also if you walk 2 miles today you are making the dog fitter to become more hyperactive and tomorrow is another day…how far will you walk the next day and the next day to calm the dog down?
As dog listeners we understand the root cause of the behavioural issues you are having with your dog. Once you understand why the dog is displaying unwanted behaviour in the first place you can begin to fix it in a way the dog understands.
Don’t get me wrong: I’m not at all suggesting that it is wrong to walk or exercise your dog, mental and physical stimulation are great for both you and your dog, just make sure you are doing it for the right reasons.
